Salkantay Trek Cusco A Scenic Path to Machu Picchu Beyond the Crowds

Unlike the regulated and often overbooked Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek  Cusco does not require permits and leads you through some of the most diverse and dramatic ecosystems in Peru. From glaciers and alpine passes to lush cloud forests and tropical plantations, every day is a completely new experience.

What Makes the Salkantay Trek Cusco So Special?

This trek is named after Salkantay Mountain (6,271 meters), one of the most sacred peaks in Andean cosmology. The route begins near Cusco, in Mollepata, and winds through remote valleys, past ancient trails, and into the heart of the jungle before culminating at the awe-inspiring site of Machu Picchu.

With Encuentros Peru Adventure, the journey is thoughtfully designed to provide not just physical challenge but also spiritual and cultural richness. Small group sizes, expert local guides, and eco-friendly camping enhance the overall experience.

5 Days of Diverse Landscapes & Local Culture

Day 1: Cusco – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake (Optional)
Start your adventure with a scenic drive through the Andes before setting off on foot to Soraypampa, a beautiful highland valley at 3,900 meters. Along the way, you'll have the chance to hike to Humantay Lake, a glacier-fed lagoon that reflects the surrounding peaks in its turquoise waters.

Day 2: Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Chaullay
Ascend to the Salkantay Pass (4,600 meters), the highest point of the trek. The panoramic views of the Salkantay glacier are unforgettable. From here, descend into the cloud forest of Chaullay, where the landscape becomes greener and the air more humid.

Day 3: Chaullay – La Playa – Lucmabamba
Walk through vibrant cloud forests and agricultural zones. You’ll pass waterfalls, coffee plantations, and tropical fruits. At Lucmabamba, you can visit a local farm, learn how coffee is grown and processed, and enjoy a tasting session of fresh, organic coffee.

Day 4: Lucmabamba – Llactapata – Aguas Calientes
Climb to Llactapata, an ancient Incan site offering a rare side-view of Machu Picchu. Then descend to Hidroeléctrica and hike along the railway to Aguas Calientes, where you'll rest before visiting the citadel.

    Day 5: Machu Picchu Exploration
Arrive early to Machu Picchu to watch the sunrise over the Andes. Take a guided tour to explore its sacred temples, terraces, and astronomy centers. If you're feeling energetic, hike Huayna Picchu for panoramic views of the ruins and surrounding jungle.
